19: Worst Margarita Ever!

It may come as a shock, but the Drink Neat Guys enjoy cocktails as well as a nice spirit poured directly from the bottle into the glass and served as is.  Matt experienced on of the worst Margaritas ever in a local restaurant and that prompted a conversation about drink making.  As part of the recording, we sampled a basic Margarita and a new favorite, Tequila Old Fashioned made with tequila but flavored (slightly) with mezcal.  The recipes are below:

  • Basic Margarita (Four Ingredients)
  • 2 oz GOOD Tequila (recommend Hornitos Reposado)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz triple sec (or upgrade with an orange liqueur like Gran Gala or Grand Marnier)
  • 1/2 oz Agave Syrup*
  • Place all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake and pour over fresh ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with lime and salt (optional)
  • Tequila Old-Fashioned
  • 2 oz GOOD Tequila
  • 1 oz Agave Syrup*
  • 1/4-1/2 oz Mezcal (more makes it smokier)
  • 2 dashes Bitters
  • Place all ingredients in a rocks glass. Add ice and stir until chilled. Be sure to express an orange peel, rub along the rim of the glass and drop in as a garnish.
  • *Agave Syrup
  • Create a simple syrup by creating a 1:1 ratio of Agave Nectar and hot water. Stir until homogenous. Refrigerate and feel free to use it any time a recipe calls for simple syrup. A drop or two of vodka will make it keep longer.
